Football Kit Fashion Styles and Designs

Football kit is required by the Laws of the Game, Law 4: The Player’s Equipment. This Law specifies 5 items of kit: shirt, shorts, socks, shin pads and footwear.  The Laws of the Game also dictate that the teams must wear colours that distinguish one side from the other and the referees. But the style of the football kit is down to preference of the team and a wide range is available. 

As with fashion generally, football fashion is subject to trends and regional variations and is an important part of football culture. The focus of football kit  fashion is the football shirt (or jersey) although there are also fluctuations to the length of football shorts to parallel the hem lines up/hem lines down trends in mainstream fashion. Perhaps the theory that hemlines go up in a boom and down in a recession also applies to football shorts… There was less scope for this in the early days of football kit as the Football Association required that football shorts (then called knickerbocks) covered the knees until the early twentieth century. It wasn’t until the 1970s that clubs began to take more of an interest in creating very individual kit designs. In 1975, Leeds United was the first club to sell replica shirts.
